More ruminations on the "Grievance Committee"
The Club's abuzz with speculation about the miscreant involved in the incident to be discussed at Thursday's special Board meeting. Apparently, the Board has not yet delegated the important function of investigating and resolving conduct issues to the "Quiver of Karens." Whether it's right or wrong, the Board has the legitimacy of having been elected by the Owners and is the right entity to adjudicate conduct offenses. But in the event that an unelected "Quiver of Karens" is established, some qualifying criteria should be established:
xx
I think there should be some hurdles that prospective members of the Quiver should clear:
- Do you believe that there should be two sets of rules around here? If so, you should steer clear of the Quiver.
- Do you drive your golf cart down the middle of the road? If so, you don't have the moral standing to pass judgment on others.
- Note: this applies only to the Quiver. "Your Board President" was spotted today driving his golf cart (festooned with fishing poles) down the middle of Oak Tree Drive at 4:10PM. Obviously, this rule doesn't apply to him (and the other Board members are probably exempted, as well).
- Have you ever told another Owner: "get the %^&* out of my yard"? If so, you probably shouldn't be judging the civility of others.
- This is another area where "Your Board President" gets grandfathered in.
- Have you ever confronted another Owner and told them they should move out of the community? Or that they don't belong here? Or that "people like them" are the problem with the Club?
- At least one Board member fails this test.
- Do you roll through the stop sign at the intersection of Colleton River Drive and Foot Point? Same comment as for driving your golf cart in the road.
- Do you stay on the cart paths when the "cart path only" rule is in effect? Fill divots? Fix ball marks on the greens? Ditto.
- Have you been rude or thoughtless in your dealings with a server, outside golf staff, or other employees? My guess would be that more club employees believe that they've been dissed than there are Owners who believe they've disrespected a club employee.
- Are you a crony of a Board member? You should probably pass. There are nearly 580 Owners. If the Board unwisely insists on delegating this difficult job to the Quiver, they can probably find people who aren't BFFs of a Board member.
I'm sure that there are other qualifying issues that should be added to this list, but you get the drift. I'm certainly not perfect and I don't believe that perfection is a reasonable standard. But if you want to judge your fellow owners, you should probably have your own house in order. In general though, imperfect elected Board members are better situated to mete out justice than are unelected members of the Quiver.
